Jun 10, 2016 · This month, as a consequence of a dance in April, I will soon be playing a contra for a 'pre convention' dance for the 65th National Square Dance Convention being held near me in Des Moines, Iowa. The dance is the night before the convention officially starts. I am very stoked and honored to be invited to play for this event. I know a goodly number of easy circle, longways set, and contra dances and singing games which are well suited to situations where total beginners of any and all ages take part. Many of these events are outside the regular contra dance scene. She was part of the resurgence of contra dances in Maine in the early 70’s, having learned from Otto Soper and Dudley Laufman. She played New England contra dances until 2009, when she began an intensive study of Québécois fiddle with mainly Éric Favreau, but also with Lisa Ornstein, André Brunet, Yvon Mimeault, and Liette Remon. Clyde has extensive experience as a musician at contra dance camps and music festivals, including multiple stints on staff at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. In Portland, he was active as a contra dance musician in the bands Jigsaw and The Rose City Aces. Susan Kevra is a dance caller, musician and singer who now makes her home in Nashville, Tennessee. She travels across the country and occasionally, around the globe to teach contra, square dances, English Country dancing and French dancing.
