Scriabin's Etude in D#m Op.8 No.12 Vladimir Horowitz, 1982 I know many find Horowitz's 60s recordings of this piece superior, but I prefer Horowitz' rendering of the middle section and the penultimate jackhammer-like section in this recording.
This CD is European export. Moscow born and trained pianist Elena Kuschnerova, currently living in Germany, is the last discovery of Harold Schonberg (1915-2003), the former chief critic of the New York Times, and the only performing artist affiliated with great and controversial Russian composer Alexander Lazarevich Lokshin (1920-1987). Op.8 No.8 is much easier, Op.8 No.9 is, IMO, the hardest of that set of etudes. I once tried it and had to give up on it after only 2 weeks. It's like 8/12 on crack- especially the LH, which sometimes has to jump more than a 15th in octaves, going at about q=108-112 in triplets.
