Music and dance played an important part in the religious and secular life of the subcontinent. Hindu religion, culture, and art spread overseas into several parts of Southeast Asia, where the two great epics of India, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, continue to play an important theatrical role.

The ICTM Performing Arts of Southeast Asia Study Group is dedicated to the study and research on music, dance and theatre as found throughout Southeast Asia, and also includes Southeast Asian performing arts elsewhere around the world.
